This was a very challenging and tense game for the Towers’ U13s, writes Fiona Morley. The first scoring chance from Trinity Gaels went wide but, even though Rebecca Condon, Aisling Seery and Eibhlín Roebuck defended well and passed the ball forward to the midfield players, Trinity Gaels scored 1-4 in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Julia Flannery, who showed great stamina throughout the game, took a shot from the half forward line and it went by the Trinity Gaels goalkeeper for Towers’ first goal. This was followed by a lovely point from captain Emma O’Malley. Passes from Eibhlín Roebuck and Julia Flannery resulted in points from Emma, who also scored a goal and a point from a 45 just before half time. Trinity Gaels, however, kept up the pressure throughout the first half, scoring goals and points and Round Towers were seven points down at half time.
In the second half Chloe Fallon Corcoran moved back to take some powerful kick-outs and helped to keep the ball moving forward for Towers. Aisling Seery defended well, catching lots of high balls and then ran up the field to score Towers’ first point of the second half. Erin Griffiths, Eibhlín Roebuck and Rebecca Condon continued to fight for the ball and good teamwork resulted in two goals from Julia Flannery. Attempts from the Towers’ girls to score for the next few minutes were denied by Trinity Gaels until Emma O’Malley scored a fabulous goal, leaving a difference of only two points. 24 minutes into the second half, Julia Flannery blocked the ball and blasted in a goal, levelling the scores. The Towers’ girls, with encouragement from their supporters, did their very best to score again but couldn’t manage it and Trinity Gaels scored a last point. Our U13s were very unlucky not to hold on for a draw but showed great grit and determination during a tough game. Well done girls!
