U16 Footballers Cruise to Victory over Fingallians
Tuesday night saw Monastery Road host a Division 3 top of the table clash between Round Towers and Fingallians of Swords. With perfect conditions for football this promised to be a cracking game.
It was Towers who got the better of the opening exchanges with reliable Joey Leech slotting home a well taken goal inside 3 minutes to put the hosts in front. Towers pushed on from there and following a great piece of play from an overlap from Kelly, to O Neill, then O Rourke who gave a diagonal ball right on the money into Murray and bang into the back of the Net. A Goal described by Gerry Banks “ as one of the best worked goals he seen in a while.”
This followed with scores coming from Joe Murray, Lu Heffernan and Leech pushing the margin to nine points before Fingallians opened their scores with a point by the wing forward.
Towers kept this momentum going right through the half and went into the break 8 points to the good.
Towers suffered a blow at half time with goalscorer Leech having to be replaced due to a shoulder injury. However this didn’t phase the home team and started the second half just as they finished the first, with pace and determination. Full forward Ciaran O Rourke winning some great ball inside 20 metres and handing it off for well taken scores was a tactic that was working brilliantly for the Clondalkin men. Fingallians hit back with a goal of their own with 10 minutes left but not before Murray slotted home to put the game to bed.
The scoreline finished Round Towers 3-11 – Fingallians 1-8.
This result puts Towers top of a competetive Division 3 league with seven games played and gives the team a positive vibe coming towards an important break in the season.
