Last Saturday saw our U16 Footballers face St Maurs of Rush. The North county Dublin lads had travelled over to Clondalkin with one thing only on their mind, and that was a win. However the Clondalkin lads had their sights on 3 out of 3 in their opening league matches. Conditions were perfect and both teams had strong panels of 20 lads. Straight from the throw in Towers attacked with the wind behind them, but they failed to capitalise with a number of wides. Towers first point came from a well taken free from Joey Leech after the 8th minute. Maurs pushed back and attached in strength and were unlucky not to get a goal as the ball hit the post. However further scores from Joey Leech, Daniel Mitchell, Lu Heffernan & a goal by Joe Murray saw Towers leading by 1-5 to 3 points at half time.
Maurs weren’t giving up and got stuck in, straight from the throw in at the second half. Forcing errors on the Towers defence they capitalised and scored a goal. Towers midfielder Alex o Neill decided to take the play into his own hands and scored 2 goals with no response. Then what can only be described as a moment of magic O Neill scored a point from a side line ball, which had all the characteristics of the famous side line by the great Maurice Fitzgerald of Kerry. Final score R Towers 4-9 Maurs 2-5.
Towers will face St Pats of Donabate in their next match on the 25th March.
