Last Saturday saw our U16s travel to Skerries to play the first round of their championship, writes team mentor Mick Broderick. The lads had a big task on hand as they had been moved up to the A Championship and were drawn against Division one leaders Sherries Harps. That didn’t put any fear on these young men as 21 of them travelled the 40 kms out to Skerries on what was a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Conditions were perfect for the match and a large contingent of Towers supporters followed out. Straight from throw in Towers appeared the sharper team and missed a few chances dropping the ball short on a number of occasions. Skerries were quick to react and attacked up the wings, however the Towers lads defended in packs.
With no score after 10 minutes, Towers got the overlap and got the ball into Joe Murray who banged it into the back of the net. This them followed by another brilliant attack by the lads and Joe Leech took on his man and went for goal. The Skerries keeper pulled off a great save and the ball went over the bar. The Skerries lads didn’t drop their heads and counter attacked and scored a goal and a point. Towers hit back with points from Leech and Murray. Skerries pushed hard and attacked for another goal, Towers keeper Oisin Douglas pulled off a number of great saves. The score line at half time was Skerries 1-5- Round Towers 1-4. Towers started slower in the second half and Skerries capitalised scoring the first few points in the second half. Following a brilliant block by Alex Judge Towers worked the ball up to Murray who took on two Skerries defenders and bang goal number 2. The towers supporters were very vocal & Towers were just one point behind with 10 minutes to go. Skerries hit back with another 3 points.
Final result Skerries 1-11- Towers 2-5. The lads will have learnt a lot from this match in particular knowing that can compete at division 1 level. Thanks to all the supports for travelling out.
