Round Tower Under 16 ladies started their Division 1 Championship last night in Moyle Park, writes Dawn O’Neill.
Playing against O’Tooles a tough match was expected but in the first minute of the match our first goal was scored and this was quickly followed by 3 points. O’Tooles responded with 2 points, only for Towers to come back with several points and another goal. The strong pace of the game kept up for most of the first half with the girls starting to slow down just as the half time whistle was blown.
Round Tower were well ahead at half-time 6-9 v O’Toole’s 2-6. The pressure was on for the girls to keep up the pressure in the second half. With a number of injuries for some of our stronger girls, both on and off the pitch, and with O’Tooles bent on closing the gap, second half was going to be a lot harder.
O’Tooles came out fighting and quickly notched up a couple of points before Towers had a chance to get a point back. As the match continued it was clear that both teams were feeling the pressure and all the girls were struggling. The Towers girls dug deep and managed to pull a great win over O’Tooles with the final score being Towers 8-12 v O’Tooles 5-12.
This has been a great win for the girls and their first division 1 win to date. Over the past 3 years the girls have won division 3 and Division 2 league titles along with a Division 2 Championship. Last year they were promoted to Division 1 for the league and although they were unable to win a match they used this time to gain experience and managed to reach the final of the Division 2 Championship only to be beaten narrowly. Now in 2013, the girls are only 1 game away to winning the Division2 league and one win under their belt for the championship
The girls next match is away to Olaf’s this Sunday at 3.30.
