These are busy days for our Under 12 hurlers. Last Friday, 9th May, they enjoyed a very special training session. Joining them for the coaching session were Dublin hurlers Ryan O’Dwywer and Conor McCormack and Olympic Gold Medallist Boxer Michael Carruth. Mick Byrne captured the action and you can see his pictures here. They also competed against Faughs last weekend, with a match report now provided by mentor Eric Byrne.
A nice icy summer breeze and a healthy mix of freezing summer hail and rain was the setting this morning for our meeting with Faughs in Corkagh park. The game was very fast paced and the sloithar was worked around the pitch with great skill from both teams and the scores quickly tallied up, with Towers leading the contest 2-1 v 1-0 at half time. Both teams raced back into positions to start the match again and with the toss of a ball the icy stick merchants went at each other with relish. The Garda were called into action as curious rubber neckers had brought the new ring road to a halt watching the lads smash the sloithar around the pitch. If Towers thought they where going to have a easy second half, the Faughs boys had different ideas about that! Faughs two midfielders were a credit to their club as they worked very hard and got some fine scores. Our full back Ciaran O’ Rourke was missing with a broken finger and it showed as the Faughs forwards found the net with unusual ease. Our lads had trained with the Dubs hurlers the night before and the excitement might have proved a factor here, ( damn them dubs 🙂 The Towers boys lost out in the end to a very gritty Faughs team. Well done to the lads. Although we lost match the lads went away happy enough in the knowledge that they played well. The score line might have been worse only for our new goal keeper Louis O’ Loughin made some fantastic saves today to earn him EP Mooney Man of the Match. Final score Round Towers 2-3 V Faughs 5-1. Thanks to the parents, and the lads who set up and struck the nets today. Towers Abú. Mentors Eric Byrne and Paul Whelan
