Round Tower Clondalkin 4-9 Skerries Harps 1-9 – Minor Football league Division 3
Towers high flying Minors returned to winning ways last night in the Community Centre and remained at the top of the league following recent reversals away to O’Tooles and Naomh Fionbarra.
Towers lined out without the services of Dublin Minor Hurler Gary Quinlivan and regulars Aaron Soady & Chris Berry but still set the early pace with an opportunist goal with the first attack of the game, Skerries returned the favour from the next kickout despite a good block from keeper Eoghan Heffernan who is still U16.
It was tit for tat stuff with Joey Murphy excelling up front for Towers and Micheal Walsh playing in a withdrawn role. Shane Boland was working tirelessly but not seeing a return on the scoreboard for his efforts. A Micheal Walsh goal right at half time put Towers in the driving seat at the break leading by double scores, 2-6 to 1-3.
Shane Boland scored a fine goal as the second half resumed and Micheal Walsh had a goalbound effort turned away by the Skerries keeper and the rebound was kept out too. A Davey McCarthy free followed by a Dan Gregg goal with twenty two minutes to go put Towers into a commanding lead but this seemed to spur Skerries into life and they scored three points in a row followed by a Joey Murphy point.
Davey McCarthy scored another point and then substitute Alan Gavin started a fine move and cut through the defence but when he laid it off it was put wide.
Skerries scored two more points to lend some respectability to the result but Towers were far the superior team. They now face into the final two league games with a good degree of confidence.
