St Josephs OCB 0-7 ,Round Towers 3-17.
Following on from a mid week walk over from Scoil Ui Chonaill the Junior hurlers made the early morning trip to Fairview on Sunday, writes John Quinlan.
With no one the wiser as to whether the game was to take place or not it was far from ideal preparation for a game.
Nevertheless 20 players made their way across town and despite a number of lads missing, a strong panel was available for Fergal and Declan to pick from. Unfortunately we had again to line out with 13 as the opposition did not have the same numbers as we did.
The first half was very much stop and go with numerous breaks in play for one thing and another . An opportunist goal from Chris Kavanagh helped Towers to a 1-7 to 0-1 half time lead. With a penalty inches over the crossbar and another shot hitting the crossbar Chris was unlucky not to have a first half hat trick.
Despite playing against the wind in the second half Towers took the game to OCB with a number of early points to stretch the lead. Following a red card for an OCB player there was only going to be one winner . Goals from Philly Caroll and a fine solo effort from Conor Hart saw Towers run out easy winners in the end. Martin Doyle ,Niall Corless and Matthew McLaughlin kept the scoreboard ticking over throughout with some good points. Our defence performed well and kept another clean sheet despite an injury suffered by Fergal Power which will hopefully not keep him out for long.
Overall despite the win it was a frustrating enough performance with lads struggling with both the pitch and the stop start nature of the game. With a number of games against other top teams in the league in August plus the championship it’s vital that the team makes a big effort on the training field over the next few weeks. With a strong panel and plenty of places up for grab on the team a big effort over the next few weeks should see us continue to top the league and progress in the championship.
