Junior Hurlers claim league honours

On Sunday the 25th Towers junior hurlers made the trip to Swords to take on St Finians. With Towers top of the table and needing a result to win the league it was a determined Finians that took the field determined to make Towers earn the title. The first half saw some excellent hurling from both sides with Finians taking a one point lead at the break. A much improved performance on the Sylvesters match saw Towers unlucky not to be in the lead with some fine goalkeeping denying Philly Carroll on a number of occasions.

At the start of the second half Towers conceded a goal which left us 4 points down. This only focused the player’s minds and Towers upped their performance. Points from Martin Doyle and Donnie saw us back on level terms. The crucial score of the game arrived from a great pass from the wing by Chris Kavangh to Eoin Hutchinson who gave the goalie no chance and Towers were in the lead. From here to the end Towers were in control and ran out well deserved winners despite the concession of a second goal in what for some reason was the 10th minute of injury team despite few if any stoppages.

With a record of 13 wins and 1 draw from 14 league matches Towers were worthy winners of their league. The players and supporters present celebrated a title that was a long time coming for some on the panel while others(particularly our minor hurlers) managed some silverware in their first season.

The efforts in particular of Fergal McDonagh,Martin Sheehan and Declan Rafferty saw us go from a situation at the start of the season where even fielding a team looked problematic to winning the title. A good mix of experience and youth throughout the season with probably 30 players plus togging out shows that there is the potential there for this team to build upon this year and gain promotion again next year. With the seniors in a play off for promotion and many players coming through the juvenile ranks the future looks bright. To cater for this more resources in terms of mentors are required from u-7 upwards so anyone who wants to help out would be more than welcomed on board.
