Jim Gavin, was awarded the council’s highest civic honour at a ceremony hosted by the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Sarah Holland on the evening of Monday 8th February. Jim Gavin was honoured for his contribution to development and promotion of Gaelic Football and for leading the Dublin Senior Football Team to ‘All Ireland’ success twice in the last three years.
The decision to hold a ceremony to honour Jim Gavin was agreed unanimously by the elected members of the council at the monthly meeting held in December 2015. Jim Gavin is originally from Clondalkin and attended Clonburris National School and Moyle Park College. Jim has enjoyed a very successful career in the Defence Forces and with the Air Corps and the Irish Aviation Authority.
Mayor Sarah Holland said she is delighted to be honouring Jim Gavin: “The reason I supported the nomination of this person is not only because of the fact that he has achieved astonishing sporting success both as a player and a manager, but because he is an outstanding role model for the young people of South Dublin County.”

A tremendous honor was bestowed upon our very own Jim Gavin last night when he was honored with the Freedom of the County by South Dublin County Council.
At the presentation ceremony, Jim spoke proudly of key influences upon his life within the South Dublin Community: St Patrick’s Estate and the people living within it; Clonburris National School, Moyle Park College, Round Tower GAA Club, the Defence Forces. Great praise was given towards John Costello and the Dublin County Board for their tremendous work in supporting and developing Gaelic Games and towards other local clubs within the county in this regard.
Accepting the honor with the great humility that helps dignify the great man he is, Jim praised the special bunch of players he is working with, stating management are there to support and it is the players who fulfill the team objectives and ultimately drive it to success.
He concluded by thanking those closest to him, his family, for supporting him in achieving his accomplishments.
Councillors spoke of the inspiration Jim and the Dubs are proving to be for the people of South Dublin and wider Dublin county. It was tremendous to see representatives of other local clubs also attend the ceremony.
Comhghairdeas Jim from all at Round Tower GAA Club. We remain immensely proud of your accomplishments and wish you and the Dubs every success for the season ahead!
Thanks to Club President Tommy Keogh for the pictures.
