Dublin 1-12 vs Cork 0-04
Sinead Treacy told the spectators that she was holding Dublin’s first ever Senior Intercounty Cup this afternoon [Sat 18th Sept] in Cashel…..and that was the truth. Dublin has collected the Aisling McGing Championship in its fourth year.
After a season where the Dublin Senior “B” squad won all their games the Girls in Blue travelled to Cashel to take on Cork’s three-in-a-row side. Dublin were quickest of the blocks and Amy Ring was unlucky not to convert a free in the opening movement. But she then set up Denise McKenna to find the back of the Cork net shortly after with a goal to start the tally on the score board. Denise then made a point resulting from a badly placed Cork kick out after the goal. Edel Drury stretched the lead in the fourth minute with the second point of the game and Dublin was on a roll. But Cork woke up and went on the offensive creating their first score of the game in reply. Leaving their full forward Eleanor Ahern deep behind their own mid field she was free to mop up any further Dublin challenge and to work the ball up the pitch. It paid off in the half as the Girls in Blue tried to pass in long balls over her head. Amy Ring did catch up with a ball half way through but a light drizzle made the surface slippery and an easy run in with only Martina O’Brien in the Cork sticks to beat came to nothing when Amy her footing…. and the ball. In Cork’s favour, they made a further three points in the half, one from a great save by Hannah Tyrell, the Dublin ‘keeper. The girls in Blue could have been down a second goal too but for Hannah’s quick reading of the offensive and a great save made. Dublin did break through and scored two more points, one just before the whistle to leave the champions trailing behind with the deficit created by the goal – Cork 0-04 to Dublin’s 1-04. But Cork looked to have the edge and didn’t bother to use the dressing room for their half time round-up!
Whilst the hand passing and working the ball up the pitch style normally favoured by the Dublin “B” squad wasn’t much in evidence in the first half, after the break the girls employed it to their advantage. Dublin again started the score board with a point in minute one with Denise McKenna making her third of four in the game. Dublin made a total of seven points in the third quarter of the game without any serious challenge from Cork. Dublin had complete control of the pitch. Dublin’s pointfest came to an end when the board read 1-11 in their favour at this stage and Cork began to make inroads into the Blue defence but it held strong with just one attempt recorded as a wide in the 22nd minute. A Dublin free in front of goal was on the way wide and Cork were lucky when Vicky Browne positioned on the end line knocked it back into play to be sneaked away by the vigilant rebellette defence. The game was over with about eight minutes left and Dublin had long periods of keepsie; hand passing to each other and playing cat with the mouse on Cork. The Girls in Blue made their twelfth point five minutes before the end and after that it was a matter of waiting until Yvonne Duffy blew her whistle to call time.
