Canadian Tourists in special visit to Round Tower

We were delighted to open our doors to a group of 52 visitors from Canada yesterday, Monday 11th July.  Robert Errity (a first cousin of John Errity) was amongst the travelling party visiting along with his wife Connie McGrath, from Boot Road. The travelling party are touring around Ireland and hail from Central Alberta in Canada.

Club President Tommy Keogh facilitated a tour of our fine village by Clondalkin Round Tower Heritage Group. Thyes Kavanagh and Josephine Byrne very kindly led the tour that saw them take in, amongst other sites, St John’s Church, the Round Tower, the new 1916 commemoration at Newlands Cross, the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and our very own clubhouse.

After learning of our Monastic settlements and walking the streets of our historic village, the group retired to the clubhouse for refreshments. The visitors received copies of the Heritage Group’s excellent new brochure that promotes Clondalkin’s historical and cultural sites.

At the club, Robert presented a cheque to our juvenile section. He was the highest bidder for a  Clondalkin Canvas Photograph featuring the Round Tower / St John’s Church that was taken by Tommy and auctioned online to support our Juvenile section. There to gratefully accept the cheque on behalf of the juvenile section were Catherine Moran and Seán McNamara.

Robert asked we extend thanks on behalf of the travelling group to all who looked after them, commenting they were looked after like “royalty” during their tour around the village and subsequent hosting in the club.

Thank you to Clondalkin Round Tower Heritage Group and Thyes and Josephine; Catherine and Seán; Sally Gilligan and Martina Lyons for extending a warm welcome and their hospitality; and to Paddy Barrett who took the pictures. Thanks also to Tommy for facilitating the visit and to Robert and the Canadians for visiting us.
