Round Tower GAA Club’s Under 11 hurlers proudly represented the club in the Division 1 Shield finals of Camaint 2012 in Parnell Park last Saturday, August 18th. Our hurlers beat Na Fianna in the semi-final by 13 points but were beaten by Naas in the final by four points. The weather was fantastic and this suited the hurling talents of the Under 11s. Parents and supporters from Towers were out in considerable numbers to cheer on the team. Towers opening match pitted them against north Dublin side Na Fianna. The first half started fast and furious with some great scores on both sides. The two week break from the competition did not look evident as both teams really got stuck into the match despite the heat. The second half saw Towers pull away and they looked the stronger throughout, but Na Fianna never dropped their heads and played splendid hurling right to the final whistle. The final scored finished Round Tower 3-5 v Na Fianna 1-4.

Towers next took to the field to take on Naas. This match saw the best hurling Towers have played this year, but Naas were proving their place in the final and went into half-time two points ahead. Two quick goals at the start of the second half gave the Co Kildare side a sizeable lead, but Towers went on the attack and blitzed the Naas goal over a ten minutesperiod. But they faced a Naas goalkeeper in superb form and unsurprisingly he earned his man of the match title after making save after save. His fullback was also excellent and when Towers finally got scores past them the clock proved the foe and Naas took the spoils. The final score finished Round Tower 1-5 v Naas 4-1.

Round Tower Under 11s wish to extend a huge thanks to their camaint sponsor Mooney’s Hyundai, who kitted the team out in very snazzy wind breaker jackets that helped them look the part for the big day. Well done to Naas, derserved winners of the Division 1 shield. A big thanks to the club, parents, kids, and their friends who made it a special day for the team. The county board also derserves a special mention, a great competition over the whole summer, and a fantasic well run finals day in parnell for all the teams involved, well done to all.
