Round Towers Clondalkin 1-12 St Marys Saggart 1-6

Round Towers U21 footballers had a comfortable victory over St Marys Saggart Monday evening to

progress to the final of the inaugural Mick Dunworth U21 Cup. Under the lights in Saggart and playing in wet and soft conditions Towers struggled to

make an impression on the game. This allowed St Marys half forward line to make a break, with some quick handpassing and a fine finish into the

bottom corner of the net, for the game’s opening goal five minutes in. The goal had a positive affect on the Towers team, who conjured up their own

goal minutes later when Dean O’Rourke finished off a superb move, with a great shot to the far left of the Marys goal. Ciaran Carr’s accurate place

kicking left the side’s level at 1-4 apiece at the break. After the restart the Towers defence was more composed and comfortable with the conditions

and led to a more direct attacking play out of the back line. Notable contributions from Paddy Stynes, James Kelly, Barry Keane, David Clarke and

David Murphy helped keep St. Marys forwards from adding to their tally. At the other end scores from Carr, O’Rourke, Chris Reid, Ore Ogunde, and

Chris Kavanagh eased Towers over the line, who at one stage were 1-11 to 1-4 up, to a six point win. They will now face the winners from the other

group, consisting of Lucan Sarsfield’s, St Pats Palmerstown and St Finians Newcastle – Date and time tbc.

Manager/Selector/Coach Rory Dunne commented afterwards, “It was a good win up in Marys, as it always is, but all the more being played on such a

heavy, wet ground. We were missing a few lads and it was good to have everyone play at least one match so far. Hopefully the more games will

help the lads build towards the championship and to top last year’s efforts. But we are not looking that far ahead yet and focusing on winning the

Mick Dunworth Cup is the priority”.
