Our Under 11 girl footballers were at home on Sunday against St Maurs with two matches on the Community Center pitches. St Maurs are tough opponents and travel with good numbers; they arrived with 24 players. Round Towers had had 28 Girls available this week from our panel of 42; Communion celebrations playing havoc with the numbers.
This week was a momentous week for the Girls aged 2006 as we advised County Board that we will play with 3 teams from August. The parents have agreed to make a huge effort in having girls ready to play on match days.
TD Eoin O’Broin is a keen supporter of GAA and kindly supported our U11 Girls by donating some funds early on in the year that went towards footballs. The Girls presented Eoin with a box of roses and a thank you card for his continued support.
It was a light week on the training field with the high temperature’s having a significant impact. Thursdays training session turned into a water fight followed by the annual visit the ice-cream van; a fantastic sight on the Commo with the Girls soaking the mentors.
The Girls showed their intensity during the warm up: bursting for the ball, shielding, tackling, shoulders in front and brought the intensity from the warmup into the games.
So this set us up nicely for our home encounter with St Maurs, the girls were in good spirits and could focus on playing brave football. They didn’t let us down on that front as every player in the green and white showed the true spirit of Round Towers. They stood tall and proud, shoulder to shoulder and competed for every ball. If they didn’t win the first they made their business to contest for the second. Fighting spirit from our Girls.
Weather wise it was a sunny day and the ground dried up nicely after torrential rain on the Saturday.
Three new players made their first of many appearances for Towers on Sunday. Well done to: Aoife Keogh, Kayai Hunter & Taylor.
Holly Redmond deserves a special mention as she is making tremendous progress over the last couple of months. She showed confidence to get her shoulder in front of her marker and get to the ball first, catching and clearing her lines continuously.
Well done Holly and a very well done to the team as a unit.
