Our under 9 girls welcomed Clanna Gael/Fontenoy from Ringsend to the Monastery Road on an early Sunday morning, June 28th. Match report by Maria Shannon
With summer holiday season underway, both teams were slightly depleted for numbers.
So rather than call off the match, the mentors from both sides had a different idea – give the girls a taste of their footballing future.
They played on a bigger pitch, which tested their fitness, two twenty minute halves and it was a 12 a side match(definitely different than the 9 a side they’re used to) with subs on each team.
It took both sides a while to get used to the new formation but with the help of the mentors and helpers Kitty, Austin, Mark, James and Aidan – the Towers girls got into the stride of the match fairly quickly.
The wind was against us in the first half but our defenders held on and got the ball out fast when they needed to towards the midfield and forward lines. There were plenty of attempts at scores, some went over, others got hit by a blast of wind, sending it wide.
However, they had the wind to their advantage in the second half and they made use of it. Plenty of scores, between hand passing over the bar and gaining skills points, to scoring from a good bit down the pitch.
The girls acquitted themselves fantastically well, kept to their positions and took on board everything their mentors were saying to them.
The Under 9’s are still training for the next few weeks and are always looking for more to join up. For more information, contact Ken on 087 998 3484.
