Tower’s U13 Camóg’s came into this match with their confidence flying high after their masterclass against St Finian’s of Swords last week, writes Paul Doran. Towers, who have not beaten Commercials in three years between various competitions, were hopeful that the day had finally come when they  would end their losing streak against this opposition.

They started brightly with a strong attack led by Ashling Ferry, but stout defending by the home side prevented Towers from taking the lead. Tower’s top forward Hannah Clark damaged her hamstring early on, but continued playing for most of the game despite the fact that her usual prowess on the field was hindered by her injury. Commercials must have wondered how they were going to contain the opposition’s relentless attacks, but as hard as they tried, Towers could not convert any of their opportunities into points on the board.

Lauren Egan was in excellent defensive form today, in what was her finest match to date for the Clondalkin side, leaving Commercials with  few scoring opportunities throughout the game. Also to the fore in the Tower’s defence was Angie Derby, who made a crucial goal-line clearance early on in the second half, as well as Mia Finnegan and Fiona Walsh, both displaying superb form.

Tower’s intense training sessions on Mondays and Thursdays are clearly paying off, as they had no fitness problems whatsoever on the  full-sized pitch during the first half, although the goals were eventually moved in after the interval. The match dragged on in the second half but Towers just could not get a winner.

Every player on the Tower’s team contributed to a fine performance  overall, their mentors and parents should be very pleased with the girls’ huge effort. Alas, the game ended all square, but the young Camog’s can look forward with ever-growing confidence to next week’s home match against Naomh Pádraig, where they may hopefully return to winnings ways.
