Almost 1,000 children will take to the hurling fields in Clondalkin in the coming weeks to participate in Round Tower GAA Club’s Summerfest 2011.
Over 20 clubs from Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow will compete in the competition at Under 8, 9, 10 and 11 levels.
The competition will begin on Saturday July 2nd at Corkagh Park in Clondalkin and will run for consecutive Saturday’s at the same venue before concluding on July 23rd.
Summerfest 2011 hopes to build on the success of last year’s inaugural competition, which saw hundreds of children participating from clubs in Dublin and Wicklow.
Eric Byrne, a Summerfest organiser says: “We’re building considerably on the success of the 2010 competition and will have almost 1,000 children from over 20 clubs and three counties coming together for Summerfest 2011. They will play fun games that will allow them develop their hurling skills and meet with children from other clubs and counties. It really is a celebration of underage hurling for the children, their mentors and their parents.”
The tournament will be played out over 10 pitches in Corkagh Park and a shop and food stall will be among the attractions for those attending.
The format for the competitions is as follows:
Under 8s
The ground hurling 7-a-side games will be 15 minutes per half and go game rules will be the format (3 points for a point and 1 for a goal; the player fouled must take the free and no kicking of the ball is allowed).
Under 9s and 10s
The format here is air hurling and the 9-a-side games will be 20 minutes per half. Once again go game rules will apply.
Under 11s
These will also be air hurling games and 20 minutes per half. They will be 11-a-side and go game rules will once again apply.
Sixteen camogie teams are taking part and teams will be playing in groups of eight and end up competing for a cup (the top four teams from the groups) or a shield (those who finish in the bottom four).
