Our U16 footballers got their ‘’A’’ shield championship campaign underway on Saturday 22nd April with their quarter final against division 2 St. Brigids. After a close championship encounter with Skerries Harps in the first round two weeks earlier Towers went into the shield full of confidence and had high expectations.
On a perfect day for football it was the Clondalkin men who started off the brighter with wing forward Joey Leech kicking the first score of the game after 3 mins. More points from Joe Murray and Sean Hampson put light between the teams early on but St. Brigid’s hit back with 3 well taken points to close the gap midway through the first half. Towers then got the break they needed when Alex O Neill won the ball in midfield played it down to Joey Leech and Leech slotting it home from 10 yards putting Towers 4 points up at the break.
Another dream start for the visitors as full forward Aaron Whelan found himself at the end of a high ball and punched it passed the Brigid’s keeper into the net for his team’s second goal. The home side then enjoyed a 10 minute spell where they were able to reduce the gap to just two points. But that’s as close as it got as Leech slotted over a series of late on frees to seal the game.
A 9 point win and a very solid performance from Towers has set them up a semi-final clash with Lucan Sarsfields on 6th May.
