Last Tuesday night saw the last round of the U16 league take place with Towers up against Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh in Monastery Road. With the Clondalkin side all ready guaranteed a play off spot but hoping to go into them top of the league it was all to play for.
It was the visitors who got off to the better start with a well taken goal coming inside the first 3 minutes of the contest. However, this did not startle the hosts with scores coming from Joe Murray, Lu Heffernan and Ciaran O Rourke settled towers down and put them right back into the game and the breakthrough came 20 mins in with Alex O Neill casually slotting home the rebound to a well saved penalty to put the gap to 5. Towers pushed on from here and 5 mins later got rewarded with Joe Murray finding the net after a well worked move starting all the way from the back line. Again the pressure was continuing to be put on and finished the half strong with two points from Aaron Whelan leaving the score at the break 2-10 – 1-04.
The second half would be a real test to Towers character to ensure that they keep the momentum going and that is exactly what we saw from every position on the pitch with tidy goalkeeping from Oisín Douglas right up to the full forward line with Murray bagging 3 points inside the first 10 minutes of the second half. Despite dominance from the Home side, Plunketts managed to pull it back to 4 points with two quick goals but they were quickly cancelled out by O Rourke and a well worked move up the field with a lay off from Conor Broderick to midfielder Jack Quinlan and bang in the back of the net.
Points from O Neill, Daniel Mitchell and a fantastic point from Adam Hanlon put the game to bed and sealed top spot in the league for Towers.
Final score: Round Towers 4-16 – Oliver Plunketts 3-08
Towers will now face Fingallians away in the first play off game on Saturday and we wish them the very best of luck.
