Towers 1-8 Lucan Sarsfields 1-7
It was 3 from 3 for Towers U15 Camogs after the hard fought victory over Lucan in a pulsating encounter on Sunday.
On a blustery day with heavy underfoot conditions, Towers came across a very resolute and skilful Lucan team and the final score line differed hugely from our very comfortable victory against them in the corresponding away fixture at the start of the season.
From the moment that the ball was thrown in you could see that this was a different Lucan team from the previous encounter. However, Towers soon found a way through and opened the scoring after 8 minutes with a great point from Kate Whelan after some sterling work from Holly Gregg and Anna Kiely. Whelan soon added to the score line with another two points from a great through passes from Megan Hoyte and Aine Byrne respectively. Lucan replied then with two points of their own.
Some great work from Roisin Flavin then sent Hoyte through and she struck a beautiful low shot into the Lucan net and 2 other points tagged on from Towers gave us a 1-6 to 0-2 lead at half time.
It seemed though that a fight back from Lucan was imminent given that the weather conditions worsened and a strong breeze came up in favour of the visitors and they soon mounted a comeback. Lucan scored 3 unanswered points to bring the score back to a 4 point gap and things took a dramatic turn in the match.
Firstly, a great flick to the back of the next by Aine Mitchell was disallowed, questionably for “square ball” and Lucan immediately came down and added 1-1 . it could have been more only for the great goalkeeping skills of Karla Meehan and the full back line of Saoirse Ng, Aoife Kelly and Abbey Maher just about kept Lucan at bay. Added to this was the persistence and tenacity from Niamh McGrattan.
Significantly Aoife Kennedy’s introduction to the full forward line also kept the strong Lucan full back in check and Rachel Condon won some vital ball at midfield.
Victory though came Tower’s way thanks to two monster frees from outside the 45 metre line converted by Whelan against the breeze on either side of another Lucan point and Towers really hung on at the end to secure a vital victory, giving us the double over Lucan.
