Round Towers U10s camogie have gone from strength to strength and were able to field two teams for the first time at this blitz. Match report by: Claudia O’Flynn & Veronica Morris
The first Towers’ team togged out against Erin’s Isle’s first and second team in their first and second matches, respectively. Elle Sheridan’s puck outs from the goal were phenomenal and were served right into the forward line (Holly Redmond, Ciara Kenny and Emily Norman) which made life very difficult for the opposition. Amy Hoolan and Aisling McGrattan battled hard in mid-field while the backline were solid, especially Tara Morris, who cleared so much traffic coming through in Towers’ direction. Lauren Fitzpatrick (captain), likewise, was steadfast in the backline and has certainly made defence her position this year. Finally, Erin Farrell Duffy, who is still relatively new to the game, held her own in the backline throughout the game. Overall, the girls were brilliant in both of these matches.
Towers’ second team initially played against Erin’s Isle’s second team, followed by a match against Stars of Erin. Molly Coleman was a powerful force in goal, saving the team on many occasions with her quick reactions and clearances from the danger zone. Just like Elle Sheridan, her puck outs rained in on the forward line giving the Towers forward trio (Emma O’Brien, Grainne Ní Mhurchadha and Isabelle Kiernan (captain)) much possession and much ball to work with. As always, Niamh Whelan in mid-field was trouble for the opposition, mopping up a lot of breaking ball and moving the sliotar intelligently around the pitch. Her partner in mid-field, and newcomer to Towers, Ava Lynham worked tirelessly alongside her and made a huge contribution. Last, but not least, the backline did wonders to support their goalie, Molly Coleman, and keep Towers in contention in both games. Aoife Robertson delivered Trojan work at left corner back, sometimes defending against more than one Erin’s Isle forward at the one time! Likewise, Eimear Franks and Olivia Tyrell, the latter also new to the game, were pivotal in the backline. Altogether, brilliant work from Towers in both matches.
The fifth match against Erin’s Isle (with each Tower’s team playing a half) ended up with a well-earned win for Towers. That outcome stood despite Molly Coleman’s excellent ‘45’ which was signalled wide by the referee but which many onlookers deemed to have been over the bar. Where’s Hawkeye when you need it?!
All in all, a great performance by everyone with Towers only losing one match out of five. Medals and goodies were well-deserved all round!
