Round Tower took a while to settle and find their rhythm in their recent blitz played in tricky windy conditions in Glencullen, writes Colm Kelly. Towers’ opposition for the day was Cuala. The first-half ended without a score thanks to some vigilant defending and excellent ground hurling by the back line Molly Coleman and Lauren Fitzpatrick and great goalkeeping by Tara O’Flynn.
In the second half, midfielder Niamh Whelan got Towers on the score board thanks to some exhausting midfield work by both Niamh herself and her comrade-in-arms, Eimear Franks, in the build up towards the goal. Towers also kept a clean sheet in the second half thanks to the prowess of goalkeeper Tara Morris and heroic defending by Tara O’Flynn and, again, Molly Coleman.
Lauren Fitzpatrick, who had been switched to the forward line, worked a great ball towards the goal which the Towers’ girls were then eager to put in the net, Isobelle Kiernan eventually pouncing to put the sliotar in the left goal corner. Spurred on by the two goals, it looked like everyone wanted a piece of the action including newcomer Grainne Ni Mhurchadha (I hope I spelt that right!). A third goal soon followed as Towers acquired an appetite for goals with Isobelle Kiernan again putting the sliotar away in the Cuala net with her new Cúltec hurley. Based on tremendous teamwork, Towers were worthy winners.
