The proposal to proceed with the development of the Monastery Road grounds was unaminously backed tonight. An excellent turnout of club members were brought through the club's proposals for the pitch and the financing of the development was discussed. More information about the plans will be coming in the weeks ahead.
This Thursday, June 17th, sees an EGM taking place in the club at 8pm with a single item on the agenda – the proposed development of the club grounds on Monastery Road.
The meeting will discuss the planned development and the financing of the project. The site at Monastery Road has been part of the Towers scene for the last 25 years and currently has a dressing room complex, full size adult pitch and sizeable training area. Severe subsidence issues have left the main pitch unplayable.
The club has embarked on a journey to develop state-of-the-art playing and training facilities that will act as a beacon to the youth of Clondalkin and bolster our juvenile playing membership.
The plan is to:
· Remediate the subsidence on the main pitch and install new drainage and a new playing surface
· Provide lighting to allow hurling and football be played under lights
· Provide a GAA approved all-weather training pitch with lighting
· Develop an integrated skills wall to afford footballers and hurlers the opportunity to develop their skills.
This ambitious plan will cost in excess of €700,000. The club wants to work with the local community to deliver these state-of-the-art facilities that will be of considerable benefit to the wider community.
This is what the project consists of:
MAIN PITCH
Step 1: A Geo-Technical survey has been commissioned to assess the extent of the subsidence and the long-term prognosis for the land.
Step 2: A drainage system will be installed to ensure the pitch is properly irrigated and water is removed in a timely manner.
Step 3: A new playing surface will be installed following the installation of the drainage system.
Step 4: A state-of-the-art lighting system will be installed to allow hurling and football to be played under light.
Step 5: The pitch will be enclosed with a spectator fencing system for the comfort of the viewing public.
TRAINING PITCH
The provision of the training pitch is critical to the success of Round Tower GAA Club. During the winter months, our teams are renting all weather playing facilities, training on unsuitable grass and mud pitches, training in halls, or in some cases not training due to lack of resources and facilities.
The training pitch will be a 95 x 65 metre GAA approved synthetic surface. We are also installing a shock pad system to meet the most rigorous safety standards. The pitch will be fully enclosed with a fencing and netting system and lit to 250 lux standard.
The pitch will be suitable for juvenile matches up to under 12 and we would see it as a key asset for the club and a venue for juvenile championship games to be played.
SKILLS WALL
A 23 metre skills wall integrated into the all-weather pitch will provide a double-sided surface capable of being used from the all-weather pitch and from grass. It will allow players develop the close ball control skills that are vital at all levels.
FINANCING THE DEVELOPMENT
The development will cost an estimated €700,000:
Main pitch: €110,000
Lighting: €150,000
All Weather: €420,000
Skills Wall: €20,000
The National Lottery and Leinster Council have committed approx €450,000 towards the immediate cost. The club’s ability to draw down these funds is conditional upon it raising the balance of €250,000 that is needed to complete the development.
