Round Towers Senior Ladies beat Colmcille of Longford in Aughnacliffe on Sunday. Well done to all involved.

Next up is the Carlow champions – full details will be announced once known.

Match report is as follows:

A very tough encounter would ensue, with both sides leading at different stages of the game. However it was to be the Dublin champions day, with a brace of scores early in the second half crucial in their success. Colmcille to their credit never gave up despite these blows and much credit must go to their defence who were very impressive, particularly in and around the scoring zone.
In front of a crowd of up on three hundred people, Colmcille played with a stiff wind in the first half and were the first to open their account with a first minute point from Michelle Farrell. However this was soon cancelled out with a 13 yard free from Hannah Turrell.
Even in the early stages it was clear that these were two evenly matched sides, with end to end play. Round Towers were first to push further ahead with a goal following a defensive error in the Colmcille back line, with Turrell again on target.
However Colmcille captain Caroline Doyle answered back straight away with a superbly struck point from 45 yards. But Round Towers increased their lead when key player Turrell found herself one-on-one with the Colmcille keeper, Deirdre Hourican, and the net was again rattled.
The sides then swap points with two frees, Genevieve Reilly and Turrell scoring. An Alison McKeon point on seventeen minutes and some quick thinking from a free from Michelle Farrell saw the Longford side just trailing by a solitary point.
A second free by Genevieve Reilly saw proceedings level and a well-worked point by Noelle Ward put Colmcille ahead, after a period of prolonged possession from the north Longford team. Two further points from Turrell and one from Michelle Farrell saw the sides level at the half-time whistle.
Round Towers now had the advantage of the strong breeze and they utilised this to devastating effect in the first five minutes of the second half adding 2-2, with goals from Hannah Turrell and Emily Hamill and points from Hamill and Aisleen Milton.
Things were not looking good for the local team, but they went on to hold the Dublin team to just one more point in the remaining twenty-five minutes. This showed great strength and determination in the Colmcille team, and they continued to fight to the bitter end.
1-1 from Michelle Farrell (goal from a penalty) kept their hopes alive but it was not to be for the Longford representatives who ended up losing by five points.
