Round Towers 2-7
Ballinteer St John’s 2-15

Towers Junior A Footballers suffered disappointment on a sunny Sunday afternoon in the Community Centre as they were comprehensively beaten by Ballinteer St John’s in the Conlon Cup. Towers struggled throughout against a Ballinteer side that caused continuous problems for the Towers’s defence.

Towers had lost Paul Clifford to injury and were 1-1 to 0 down 15 minutes into the game before full-forward James Fleming struck the bar from 14 yards when going for goal minutes before Denis Macken tapped over Towers first point from a 21 yard free that was won when Ger Hickey ran at the Ballinteer defence. Ballinteer responded with a point before Macken scored Towers second after Ger Homan picked him out with a clever ball. Fleming struck a few minutes later but Ballinteer converted their chances and were 1-6 to 0-3 ahead at the break. The half-time scoreline could have had a different look but Tom Curran’s shot went narrowly from 14 yards after he beat two Ballinteer players. It could have been worse for the home side though, as goalkeeper Gordon Gallagher was forced into a smart stop with his feet a minute before the break.

Towers were 1-8 to 0-3 down ten minutes into the second half before substitute Jason Mockler converted and James Fleming then reduced the deficit to six points. Ballinteer were taking their chances and a Denis Macken free and Aidan Lawlor goal, after Stephen Homan’s shot had been parried, left the home side trailing by three points. But the visitors finished the game moments later when Gordon Gallagher saved but two Ballinteer players were waiting to tap the ball into an empty net. There was time for a Towers consolation when a high ball into the box was claimed by Eoghan Moore who turned and finished smartly to the net.
