Under 10’s Girls Football V Thomas Davis

Our Under 10 girls came back from their Christmas break with their 1st game against local rivals Thomas Davis on February 7th 2016. Match Report by Maria Shannon.

It was a bright, cold and breezy morning on the Monastery Road as our Under 10 Girl footballers played their first match of the New Year. Thomas Davis were the opponents who made the very short journey up the M50.

This was scheduled as a two teamer two game pre-season challenge.  The visitors arrived with enough Girls to enter 1 team, as a result one 40 minute match was played, starting as a 13 aside.  Towers mentors ensured all their team played by fielding 8 fresh faces for the second half.

There were a few changes for the U10 girls; a bigger pitch meaning more running and getting used to slight changes in positions.

The Green & White of Towers started with Alannah Fitzmaurice between the sticks supported by Emma Fogarty, Aoife Robertson, Emma O’Brien and Niamh Downes holding the back line. The girls defended with great gusto; working the ball out of the back line into midfield. The defence did all that was asked; putting pressure on their opponents, holding their line, blocking & hassling at every opportunity.

Rebecca Nolan, Muirinn Ward, Alannah McCabe & Sadhbh Breen playing in the middle of the park worked hard to maintain possession by getting to the ball first and using the lines to good effect. The Towers midfield showed good skills today with some very good support play and running at their opponents creating opportunities for the forward line.  Indeed Alannah McCabe grabbed a couple of well worked points from midfield with a well-used side-step.

Aoife McCabe, Maria Byrne and Ella Dermody started the 1st half in the forward line. All the girls had a go today and that’s exactly what was asked of them; the Girls battled with a strong breeze with the wind making scoring that bit more challenging.  Ella Dermody & Maria Byrne moved into the middle of the park for the second half with Ella really coming into her own.  As was expected at the start of the game there was a lot of chopping and changing for Towers for the 2nd half with Sadhbh Keane, Shonagh Byrne, Ella O’Reilly, Fiona Jackson, Aisling McGrattan and Lauren Fitzpatrick slotting well into a number of roles; some brilliant kicking and point scoring as well.

Training will resume Thursday at 5.45 on the Monastery Road. New players welcome, for more details call Ken on 087 9983484
